Ryan Robinson has released an AUv3 MIDI sequencer called OODA – Portable MIDI Sequencer. On its release, it shot to the #1 spot on the Music App Charts in the App Store. Ryan is also the creator of the popular Zoa – Living Sequencer and AutoPad apps, also built with AudioKit.
RYAN SHARED HIS INSPIRATION FOR MAKING THE APP
“I love using hardware step sequencers with synths, they’re so easy to use! Just record in some notes and press play. The only problem is that usually, I find myself wanting to add in some variation or switch up my sequence on the fly. So that was the starting point for OODA, I wanted to have something that was easy to use to make basic sequences, but then still have options for live interaction and modification of the sequence.”
THOUGHTS FROM RYAN ON BUILDING THE APP
“Since OODA has a lot in common with my other sequencer ZOA, it ended up being more of a design challenge than a coding challenge. It’s surprisingly difficult to make something that looks good and behaves nicely across all devices and screen sizes and use cases (ex. AUv3 vs standalone).
Inevitably you have to make some compromises, but overall I’m happy with how it came out! Of course, I want to give a shoutout to AudioKit! I use AudioKit for the standalone app’s built-in synth and MIDI IO. AudioKit provides a really nice interface for interacting with CoreMIDI and saves me a lot of headaches.”
