BEHIND THE SCENES…
RECORDING Classic 16-Bit Synthesis
YM2612 SYNTHESIZER CHIP
The Sega Genesis and MegaDrive are fitted with a Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesizer sound chip. The chip allows for six channels of sound, each with four operators that can be arranged into 8 different algorithms. It’s the YM2612 that gives Sega’s 16-Bit consoles the characteristic grit found in so many classic games.
Five different YM2612 chips were used in the making of this app,
giving you the most expressive and raw 16-bit sound ever recorded!
We used the GenMDM to record the chips.
It’s a MIDI device that connects to the control port of the Genesis/MegaDrive.
The GenMDM provided us with full control over the YM2612 chips!
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE…
Twisted Electrons MEGAfm 16-Bit FM Synthesizer
For even more customized sounds, we used the Twisted Electrons MEGAfm synthesizer which has two of the Yamaha YM2612 chips inside. We used the rare first edition MEGAfm models, known for their beautifully mangled raw sounds to make this app.
This beautifully dirty and harmonically rich synth adds even more character to the app!
Two highly-sought after first edition MEGAfm synths were sampled.
Use SAGA Synth as an AUv3 Plug-in on your iPad/iPhone. Shown here in GarageBand (A free iOS DAW).
