A New Chapter for Our Older & Retired Apps

A New Chapter for Some of Our Older Apps

Hey everyone,

We wanted to share something that’s both exciting and a little bittersweet: after over nine years of creating and maintaining some of your favorite apps, we’ve decided it’s time to pass the torch for a few of our legacy apps.

Apps like Digital D1, FM Player 2, Digitalism 2000, Bass 808, Retro Piano, AR 909, and VHS Synth have been a huge part of AudioKit’s story. They’ve meant so much to us, but most of the original developers have moved on to new projects, and we realized we couldn’t give these apps the love and care they deserve anymore.

Most of the original team who worked on those apps has moved on, and rather than letting these tools fall by the wayside, we collectively decided it was better to hand them over to folks who could keep them alive and supported.

The team taking over these apps is Space Mushrooms, a group with a proven history of supporting open-source projects. They’ve assured us they’ll continue to support and update the apps, and—this is really important to us—they won’t charge existing users again. Some apps, like the beloved AR 909, are even going back to their original developers, who will be able to continue their work where they left off.

This change lets AudioKit focus on creating free and open-source tools. And, improve the apps you’re using now—like King of FM, King of Digital, King of Bass, SAGA Synth, SNES Synth, NERD Synth, and others. We’re 100% committed to improving and supporting these, and AudioKit will focus more on creating free, open-source tools to empower musicians and creators everywhere.

This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the best way to keep these older apps alive and thriving. We’d rather see them grow with new developers than disappear from the app store.

We know you may have questions about this change, so we’ve put together a detailed update that covers everything:

We’ve worked hard to make sure all of our latest apps stay under the AudioKit umbrella so we can keep supporting and improving them for you.

Thank you for being part of the AudioKit community. Your support means everything to us, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.

With gratitude,
The AudioKit Team

USING THE AUv3s IN YOUR DAW:

You’ll now find Digital D1, FM Player 2, Digitalism 2000, Bass 808, Retro Piano, and VHS Synth listed under “Space Mushrooms” instead of AudioKit in your DAW.

Here’s how to get them working:

  1. First, remove the old version of the plugin from your project.
  2. Then, re-add the version now listed under “Space Mushrooms” in your DAW.
  3. If you don’t see it right away, try restarting your device—that should fix it.

That’s it! You’re good to go.
